Special commitment to the members of the volunteer fire brigade Dolintschach in Carinthia. The comrades save the life of a runaway pregnant cow and her calf.
“The pregnant cow was in the meadow and escaped Tuesday evening,” said fire chief Johann Widmann of the “Krone”. Because the animal was heavily pregnant, the farmer asked the Dolichach fire brigade for help. The ten emergency services searched for the animal with the help of a thermal imaging camera. Fortunately, she was discovered in the woods.
“Fifbones have already peeked out”
“The cow was so shy that she couldn’t be caught. Then we drove them to the barn together with the herd,” says Widmann. Just in time. “The calf’s legs are already sticking out!”
Comrades helped with the delivery
Together with a veterinarian, the firefighters then helped with the delivery. “I did have some experience of the farm, but I have never had such an assignment in 30 years”, the commander laughs.
The delivery itself was complicated because the calf was upside down in the womb. The vet and the comrades managed to deliver the calf healthy. “I’m glad this unusual mission had such a happy ending. The animal is said to have died in the forest,” says Widmann.
