The Belgian authorities arrested this Friday in Antwerp suspected of ramming a terrace in the center of Brussels with a van, which means six slightly injuredand who subsequently fled, as confirmed by the Brussels public prosecutor’s office at a press conference.
The event, which happened around 12:50 a.m. Friday, has prompted the Threat Assessment Coordinating Body (OCAM) temporarily raise the terror alert from level 2 to 3 (out of four possible) in some “sensitive places” in the Belgian capital, although it returned to level 2 shortly after, according to Belgian media.
The event has taken place in the street Saint-Michel, perpendicular to the Adolphe Max boulevard and close to Rue Neuve, one of the most important commercial arteries in Brussels. The vehicle is located not far from the incident area, already without the driver.
The mayor of the center of Brussels, Philippe Close, explained to the newspaper Le Soir that a van “entered rue Saint-Michel, turned around in the same street and drove to the terrace of an establishment”, but that “luckily people avoid the van.”
“There are no injuries that had to be evacuatedyes some people in shock,” added Close.
The mayor has declined “to draw any conclusions for investigators” as to whether it is an intentional outcry, but has acknowledged that “the vehicle was traveling at a very high speed and it was pointing at the terrace”.
At a subsequent press conference, a spokeswoman for the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office informed the media that: The suspect in the assault was arrested in the course of the afternoon in the city of Antwerp, located in the north of the country, an hour’s drive from the capital.
the inmate will be questioned by the police in the next few hours and the prosecution stressed that “the investigation is still ongoing” to clarify the “exact circumstances” of the outcry, because for the time being “there are several tracks open” and “the motive of the suspect is still unknown”.
