Spectators cheered – illegally built “Twin Towers” in India blown up

Date:

In India, two 100-meter-high, illegally built skyscrapers have been blown up. In about nine seconds, they collapsed to cheers from onlookers (video above). A year ago, the Supreme Court ordered the demolition of the residential towers near the Indian capital New Delhi because the private contractor had violated building regulations.

At the time, the court also ordered measures to be taken against officials who had accepted the building plans. The thriving real estate sector in the National Capital Region – which includes New Delhi and other districts around the capital – is notorious for developers violating regulations, often in collusion with officials. Buyers of the apartments must also be compensated. Indian media refer to the two skyscrapers as “Twin Towers”.

3700 kilos of explosives needed
The controlled demolition took place in a densely populated area near the capital New Delhi. With 3,700 kilograms of explosives, the lower floor had to collapse first and then the upper floors, said a representative of the company that ordered the demolition. It was therefore expected that the explosion would cause small vibrations that would be felt up to 30 meters away. Experts from different countries were involved in the explosion.

Several thousand residents of surrounding buildings were asked to leave their homes on Sunday. Hang up paintings, among other things, and leave windows closed. Adjacent buildings were pre-covered with a special fabric to protect them from dust. Stray dogs and cows were also taken away before the explosion, local media reported. During the blast, there was a temporary no-fly zone in the area and traffic was also restricted.

Tons of debris
Residents had never taken up residence in the two blown up towers. After the blast, workers had to clear tons of debris.
