Compressor maintenance – As of Wednesday no more gas will flow through Nord Stream 1

Date:

From Wednesday, the Russian gas supply via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline will be interrupted again. The reason: From August 31 to September 2, the only remaining gas compressor unit of the Portovaya compressor station will be serviced. The Gazprom group already announced this on August 19.

According to Russian information, Nord Stream 1 is currently only 20 percent used due to a lack of turbines. This means that around 33 million cubic meters of gas is pumped through the Baltic Sea to Germany every day.

Gas compressor unit being serviced
The austerity measures, justified by technical necessity on the Russian side, led to a further huge increase in gas prices. The last remaining turbine of the Portovaya compressor station would then be maintained on site by Siemens experts.

Fear of total stop of gas supplies
There are fears in the market that the flow of gas from Russia, which has already been severely curtailed, could come to a complete halt if deliveries are not resumed after the break. However, Moscow insists it intends to meet its delivery commitments.

However, the German gas storage companies expect that, despite the impending supply disruption, natural gas can continue to be stored in Germany. If necessary, the storage will be carried out to a slightly lesser extent, said the director of the industry association Initiative Energies Storage (INES), Sebastian Bleschke, of the German news agency dpa. He emphasized that currently a multiple of the amount imported to Germany via the Baltic Sea pipeline is stored every day.
