The video of a landslide on the French side of the Mont Blanc massif along the Cresta des Cosmiques, where some climbers were present at the time of the event, also caused a stir in Italy. The landslide happened Monday. “Boulders the size of a house fell like a thunderclap,” climber Nick Lozica reports on his Instagram profile. No one was injured.
Due to the current weather conditions, the mountain guides of Chamonix have suspended the climbs on the route to the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 meters) since July 25. The track was already closed for the rockfall for this season, Lozica confirmed on his social media channels. Climbers filmed a rock fall on another part of the massif in July (see video above).
On the Italian side of the Mont Blanc massif, the alpine rescue service of the northern Italian Valle d’Aosta discovered during a helicopter flight last week that a landslide that had broken off at the Col de la Fourche at an altitude of 3682 meters had left the Alberico bivouac Borgna on the southeastern ridge of Mont Maudit.
Mountaineer Nick Lozica shared this video of the massive rock fall on Instagram:
Climate change promotes such mass movements
Eleven people died on July 3 when a glacier broke off on Marmolada in Trentino. The mayor of the municipality of Canazei then ordered an extension of the so-called red zone, which can no longer be entered. The reason is the possible instability of a rock niche and the widening of several fissures, climate change may also be a factor: the area was previously much warmer than normal. Meltwater could therefore have favored the departure.
