Auction house Sotheby’s says a pink cut diamond that goes under the hammer on October 5 could fetch more than $21 million. Sotheby’s will announce that on Wednesday.
The 11.15 carat (2.23 gram) pillow-shaped diamond is described as one of the purest in the world. In tribute to two other pink diamonds, the gem is named the “Williamson Pink Star”. One is the oval, 59.60 carat (11.92 grams) “CTF Pink Star” that changed hands at auction in 2017 for a record price of $71.2 million (then just under $68 million).
Due to the high demand for the extremely rare pieces, the prices for colored diamonds have risen sharply in recent years. Large, colorful jewels have been wildly popular with the super-rich for quite some time now. Especially pure, colored diamonds and diamonds called “fancy” (in German chic) are becoming increasingly popular with buyers. Auction houses around the world regularly fetch record prices with such jewels.
