According to a report, Britain also wants to bring asylum seekers to Rwanda who have been tortured in their home country. Doctors from the Medical Justice organization have found “clinical evidence” of torture in 14 of 17 investigated migrants who will be flown to the East African country, the BBC reported Thursday. Six of them would have been victims of human trafficking. The report did not mention which country they came from.
The British Home Office had already told the migrants that they would be flown from Britain to Rwanda on the basis of a controversial agreement. A ministry spokesman denied that vulnerable people would be taken there. “We have always made it clear that no one will be flown out for whom it is unsafe or inappropriate.”
violation of international law
The plan provides for asylum seekers from diverse backgrounds, who often crossed the Channel in dinghies, to be brought to Rwanda. If they are entitled to asylum, they should stay there. Otherwise they risk deportation to their country of origin. The United Nations Refugee Agency considers the plan a violation of international law. The bishops of England spoke of a “disgrace to Britain”.
The first scheduled flight to Rwanda was halted shortly before departure by an order from the European Court of Human Rights in June. A thorough review by the British judiciary is expected next week in London.
