Patient advocacy takes seriously the reports of danger from some Viennese hospitals. Those responsible should do the same. Because negative effects on patients cannot be ruled out. Especially the staff suffers.
It was only on Monday that the Vienna Health Association downplayed the hospitals’ danger reports. Not only the staff there see it differently, but also the patient’s advocacy. “Patients face delays in surgical appointments, multiple transports and examinations (note due to the merging of the wards), overworked and therefore irritable and in extreme cases error-prone doctors and nurses,” explains patient attorney Gerhard Jelinek at “Kronon” request. .
Long waiting times
The complaints he received often complained about waiting times and unfriendly behaviour. “It is difficult to estimate to what extent treatment errors can be attributed to overwork,” continues Jelinek.
Risk reporting no longer a surprise
There are fires on the roof, especially in child and adolescent psychiatry. Unfortunately, the number of patients is increasing, but there are not enough doctors for a long time. “Any report of danger comes as no surprise to us,” says the Patient Interest Representation Network, which supports people in psychiatric treatment.
“For many months we have seen the increasing admission of patients who are accommodated in many clinics there. Complaints that patients have to wait very long for support with personal hygiene are unfortunately no longer isolated cases,” says a spokeswoman. A lot of money is needed for the tried and tested, such as the classic intramural youth psychiatry, and a lot of money for new things, such as day clinics and home care.
