Schools closed as Hurricane Kay approaches vacation destinations in Mexico

Date:

Hurricane Kay is headed for the popular tourist towns of Los Cabos at the southern tip of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. With wind speeds of up to 140 kilometers per hour, the tropical storm moved northwest towards the peninsula, the US Hurricane Center announced on Tuesday.

The center of the Category 1 hurricane must stay over the Pacific Ocean and not make landfall. Nevertheless, “Kay” in Baja California Sur and the state of Sinaloa is likely to bring heavy rain, strong wind gusts and high waves in the coming days, the Mexican Weather Service said.

Flood hazard
Schools in Sinaloa remained closed on Tuesday. The Mexican weather service warned of flooding and called on people in the affected areas to be careful.

Hurricane season in the Pacific is from May 15 to November 30 and in the Atlantic from June 1 to November 30. Last year, 19 hurricanes and tropical storms were recorded in the eastern Pacific and 21 tropical cyclones in the Atlantic.
