At least 11 people died when a multi-storey apartment building collapsed in Aleppo. Three of the victims were children. Two people were also seriously injured in the accident on Wednesday evening. After the collapse of the five-storey apartment building, rescuers searched for other people under the rubble. The neighborhood south of the city was bombed before the collapse, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
A woman and a child have been rescued and taken to hospital, Syrian news agency Sana reported. The collapsed house was built illegally. According to Syrian state television, seven nearby buildings were evacuated for fear they too could collapse.
Government forces control district
The Fardous district, where the accident site is located, was a rebel-controlled neighborhood until December 2016, when government forces, aided by Russia and Iran, took the eastern parts of the city. Before that, it had been in the possession of the insurgents for four years.
Many buildings in Aleppo – de largest city in Syria and former trading center – were completely destroyed or damaged during the 11-year civil war in Syria. Hundreds of thousands of people have died in the conflict, which continues to this day. Before the war, the country had 23 million inhabitants, about half of whom were displaced.
