End of holiday in Austria – last traffic jam weekend of the summer is coming

Date:

The coming weekend will be the last and probably the strongest of the 2022 travel summer. In Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol and Vorarlberg, as well as in the German states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the holidays have come to an end. European Bike Week, the Dolomitenmann and some events also cause closures and long traffic jams. According to ARBÖ traffic experts, a lot of patience will be required on the road.

The fact that about 3.5 million students from southern and western Austria as well as from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg have to go back to school, mainly on Saturdays, but sometimes also on Friday afternoons and Sundays that there are kilometers of cans of traffic columns and delays of one hour. on the transit routes in the south and west and in neighboring Bavaria, Italy and Slovenia.

A lot of patience will also be required at the border, both when entering and leaving the country. The ARBÖ traffic experts have compiled the routes with the probably longest traffic jams in Austria:

  • Brenner Autobahn (A13), before the Schönberg toll station and between Schönberg and Innsbruck in the roadworks
  • Fernpassstraße (B179), complete with block treatment for the Lermooser and border tunnel Vils/Füssen
  • Inntal autobahn (A12), in the Innsbruck region and before the Kufstein/Kiefersfelden border crossing when leaving the country
  • Karawankenautobahn (A11), drive up and down for the Karawankentunnel
  • Mühlkreisautobahn (A8), before the border crossing Suben when leaving the country
  • Pyhrnautobahn (A9), in front of the construction site between Deutschfeistritz and Übelbach and the Klaus tunnel chain and in the area of Graz
  • Südautobahn (A2), near Villach, near Klagenfurt, on the Pack and near Graz
  • Tauernautobahn (A10), near Villach, in front of the Karawankentunnel and between Hüttau and Salzburg-Süd
  • Westautobahn (A1), in the vicinity of Salzburg and before the Walserberg border crossing when leaving the country, as well as in the area of Linz
  • National highway Zillertal (B169, before the Brettfalltunnel, with block handling

“At the city entrances of Graz, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Linz and Salzburg it sometimes takes much longer, especially from midday on Sundays,” the ARBÖ traffic experts know.

Tin column towards Munich
In neighboring Bavaria, the longest columns can be expected on the Salzburg-Munich (A8) connection, the Suben-Nuremberg (A3) connection and the Kufstein-Rosenheim (A93) connection. In Italy you have to be patient towards Austria, on the Brennerautobahn (A22), between Sterzing/Vipiteno and the Brenner/Brennero and on the Autostrada Alpe-Adria (A23), near Udine and Tarvisio.

Hours of waiting are almost inevitable in Slovenia for the Karawanken tunnel on the A2 motorway and for the Sentilj/Spielfeld border.
