The number of wolf sightings in Carinthia is increasing. Affected alpine farmers therefore invited all Austrian EU mandates to the region to find a solution – but no one came.
Wolves are still causing a stir among Carinthian Alpine farmers because they don’t know how to protect their cows, horses or sheep, or can’t afford it. Many of those affected also fail to understand why wolves in the EU enjoy such a high protection status, although their population is classified as stable according to the IOCN i.e. the International Union for Conservation of Nature and therefore not endangered.
“Wolves have not been on the red list of endangered species for years,” said Sepp Obweger of the Carinthische Almwirtschaftsverein. To discuss this, the local alpine pasture associations wanted to invite the 19 Austrian EU-mandates to the Hochstadel in Oberdrauburg, so they could get a sense of the concerns of the alpine farmers on site – after all, the first Carinthian wolf pack lives there too.
But of the 19 politicians, according to Obweger, only the Styrian MEP Simone Schmiedtbauer would have been willing to do so.
