Spain’s health minister wants to scrap the requirement for face masks for indoor spaces other than public transport and medical centers after Easter, when many residents travel and visit families. Carolina Daria said she will present the proposed measure at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, April 19.
If approved, as expected, it will go into effect the next day. More than 92% of Spaniards over the age of 12 have received at least two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.
The country’s high vaccination rate has put relatively less pressure on hospitals during the recent spike in infections. In February, authorities no longer made outdoor mask use mandatory as the wave of cases caused by the more contagious variant of the micron subsided.
In March, Spain lifted mandatory home isolation for people infected with the coronavirus but not showing mild symptoms.
