The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved a corona vaccine on Monday that is also effective against the ommicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5. The Amsterdam-based EMA said the approval of this Biontech/Pfizer vaccine will once again expand the vaccine arsenal to protect against Covid-19 as fall and winter approach.
The vaccine that has now been approved is a so-called bivalent corona vaccine, which is designed to protect against the original form of the coronavirus as well as BA.4 and BA.5, the currently dominant subtypes of the ommicron variant of the coronavirus. .
First Omikron booster already approved
On September 1, the EMA approved the first corona vaccines adapted to the omicron variant. The two vaccines in question from Biontech/Pfizer and Moderna target the omicron subvariant BA.1. Until now, people in the EU have been vaccinated with corona vaccines that were approved about 20 months ago. They also offer some protection against the Omicron variant.
The sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 are currently worldwide and have caused the most recent corona waves in Europe and the US in recent months.
