Woman killed in crash – deadly race: steering wheel (26) takes part in race

Date:

The death of a 48-year-old driver whose car was rammed into an illegal street race on the Wiener Ring on Sunday night has caused horror. However, the 26-year-old driver, who is said to have caused the fatal accident, denies a race – the suspect also does not want to drive too fast.

The accident happened around 7.45 pm on the Schottenring near the Vienna stock exchange. Two men, the 26-year-old and another, were on the Ring with their powerful cars, a Mercedes and a BMW. Police say the 26-year-old raced his vehicle through an intersection when the red light was on and collided with the 48-year-old woman’s car trying to cross the ring road.

The woman was trapped in her badly damaged car and had to be freed by the professional fire brigade with hydraulic equipment. After receiving emergency medical care from the professional rescue service, she was taken to a hospital trauma room, where she succumbed to her serious injuries.

Investigation into involuntary manslaughter
The 26-year-old, who suffered minor injuries in the accident, was arrested at the scene. It involved a Syrian citizen with a Belgian driver’s license who does not live in Vienna. According to police spokesman Markus Dittrich, he stated that he was here as a tourist. The car was in his name. A public health official found that the young man not only had apparently traveled too fast, but was also overtired. Police are investigating culpable homicide on the road.

A video recorded by a car driving behind the vehicles involved documented what happened. “Of course you can see the whole race and the accident from a certain distance, because the two started faster than the other road users,” says Dittrich.

26-year-old drives competitions ‘on principle’
According to his own statement, the 26-year-old does not want to have raced. “He actually denies it and says he hasn’t raced and doesn’t want to drive too fast,” Dittrich told APA on Tuesday. The driver of the second vehicle, which would have been involved in the road race, turned himself in on Sunday during the official act. Initially, the police only called him as a witness. Nothing has changed in this status: “He has not yet been interrogated,” said Dittrich.
