Former special counsel in the investigation against then-U.S. President Bill Clinton, Kenneth Starr, has died. The prominent attorney died Tuesday at the age of 76 at a hospital in Houston, Texas, of complications from surgery, his family said. Starr is best known for his investigation into Clinton, which at the time led to impeachment proceedings against the Democratic president.
Clinton was acquitted at the end of the trial in 1999 because the necessary two-thirds majority of 67 of the 100 senators for impeachment did not come together.
Trump brought Starr on the team
In 2020, then-Republican President Donald Trump enlisted Starr’s support in his second congressional impeachment trial and included him on his defense team. Trump had described the lawyer as a “disaster” after Clinton’s acquittal in 1999. Even with Trump, the necessary majority for a guilty plea did not come together at the end of the Senate trial.
Represent the government too
Former federal judge Starr was also the government’s chief counsel for the Supreme Court. Mitch McConnell, the minority leader of the Republican Senate, expressed grief over his death, declaring, “He was a brilliant lawyer, a formidable leader and a staunch patriot.”
