After a search of the private property of former US President Donald Trump, a neutral expert has been appointed to examine the seized documents. New York attorney Raymond Dearie must take on this role, a judge ruled Thursday evening (local time). Trump’s lawyers had suggested Dearie in the lawsuit over the appointment of a special representative. The Justice Department also agreed with his appeal.
In early August, the FBI searched Trump’s mansion in Florida. The FBI seized several classified documents, some of which had the highest level of secrecy. Since Trump kept the data on his private estate after his term in office, he may have broken the law. This is now being investigated.
Neutral examiner required
Trump and his lawyers have criticized the authorities’ actions as being politically motivated. They demanded the appointment of a neutral accountant and filed a corresponding lawsuit. A court has granted Trump’s request: the seized documents must therefore be checked by the special representative and authorities must stop looking at the documents until then.
The Justice Department had complained that the appointment of the special representative would delay the investigation. It is now unclear how long Judge Dearie, 78, will review the documents. He is believed to identify any seized personal belongings of the ex-president and make recommendations for potential disputes between the two sides over the categorization of the documents.
