One person has been killed in a fire in an apartment in Vienna’s Hernals district. The dead man was discovered by rescuers on Thursday evening: the man’s daughter-in-law could no longer reach the 70-year-old, apparently for fear of an accident and alerted the rescue service.
Emergency services were given access to the pensioner’s home with a key that was in a key safe. When they opened the door, the helpers discovered that the entire apartment was covered in soot. Moments later, they also discovered the 70-year-old they were looking for, but for whom help came too late. The hands of the dead were also covered in soot, the Vienna police said Friday.
The professional fire brigade of Vienna then checked the apartment, but found that the fire had already gone completely out. The fire may have started in the kitchen. Investigators said the stove caught fire.
