The independent UN mission set up to investigate the invasion of Ukraine has confirmed that Russia is guilty of war crimes in the country during the war. These crimes include summary executions or sexual violence against children, for which the Ukrainian delegation has requested the establishment of a court to assess these abuses at the highest level.

The mission’s chairman, Erik Mose, made his first appearance today before the United Nations Human Rights Council, which approved this investigation in March, to list a long list of war crimes committed in the zones of Kiev, Kharkov, Chernihiv and Sumithe areas studied so far.

“We are impressed by the high number of executions that have taken place in the areas we have visited,” emphasized the Norwegian expert, who has indicated that these murders have been identified in at least 16 locations, with evidence such as hands tied behind their backs. the victims, shot in the head or slit throat.

Moss also explained cases of children “raped, tortured and illegally detained”and cases of sexual violence perpetrated by Russian soldiers “with the ages of the victims ranging from four to 82 years”, sometimes requiring their relatives to witness the abuse.

He has also cited examples of possible war crimes, such as torture in illegal detention centers, electric shocks and forced nudity.

Other war crimes that the UN has confirmed are attacks with explosives on residential areas, schools or hospitals, which killed some 6,000 civilians, according to the organization.

Following the oral mission report, a full document of their investigations will be presented at the Council meeting in March 2023.

The Ukrainian delegation, for its part, has asked the same UN body to set up a specific court to try crimes of the Russian war during the invasion.
