According to official figures, significantly more foreign tourists traveled to Turkey in the first eight months of this year than in the same period last year. About 29.3 million holidaymakers came to the country from January to August, according to the state agency Anadolu, citing Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. That is an increase of about 108 percent compared to the same period in 2021.
The reason for the sharp increase is probably the lifting of the corona travel restrictions. According to the report, German visitors were the top group with a number of about 3.9 million – this visitor group has roughly doubled (plus about 106 percent) compared to the same period last year. Russia followed with about 3.3 million and Great Britain with about 2.4 million tourists.
In August alone, the number of foreign visitors increased by 52.32 percent compared to the same period last year, to 6.3 million holidaymakers in Turkey.
