An increasing tropical storm is headed for Cuba and the US state of Florida. Storm “Ian” is expected to become a hurricane and then continue to gain strength, the US Hurricane Center NHC said.
The storm center is expected to pass over or near the Cayman Islands on Monday and over or near western Cuba from Tuesday night (local time). Significantly strong winds and storm surges are expected in the western part of Cuba.
Floods and mudslides threaten
The water level there can rise up to four meters above normal. The area around the capital Havana was also hit by tropical storms. The expected large amounts of rain could cause flash flooding and mudslides in higher elevations in both Cuba and Jamaica.
State of emergency declared in Florida
According to the information, heavy rains, flash floods and flooding are also expected in Florida by mid-week, first in the Florida Keys island chain and then further north. State Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency as a precaution and called on the population to take appropriate precautions.
NASA cancels Artemis launch attempt
Because of the storm, the US space agency NASA has canceled the launch attempt for the trouble-plagued lunar mission “Artemis” scheduled for Tuesday. The reason given in a statement was the approaching tropical storm. US President Joe Biden, who planned to travel to Florida on Tuesday for a campaign event, also postponed the trip because of the storm.
