In 2029, the line will connect Etxebarri with the connection of the Busturialdea and Durangaldea rail network, with a 6.3 kilometers extension of the network to Galdakao. The Basque Parliament must now approve the agreement between the Basque Government, ETS and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.

Today, on the proposal of the Minister of Territorial Planning, Housing and Transport, Iñaki Arriola, the Governing Council authorized the signing of the Cooperation Agreement between the Basque Government -Departments of Finance and Transport-, the public entity Euskal Trenbide Sarea ( ETS) and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia for the construction and financing of the L5 of the Bilbao Metro between Etxebarri and the connection of the Busturialdea and Durangaldea rail networkas well as its integration into the metropolitan system.

Under the agreement, it is ETS that will prepare the technical studies and projects, including those of economic viability and environmental impact assessment, for this extension of the 6.3-kilometer suburban network to Galdakao. The public body dependent on the Ministry of Transport will also be responsible for the construction of the new line with five seasons –Sarratu, Aperribai, Bengoetxe, Galdakao and Usansolo Hospital-, along with their factory management and inspection.

For its part, the The Basque Government and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia finance 50% the new infrastructure, with an investment of €360 million between 2023 and 2029. The rolling stock for the operation of the service, which will be performed by Euskotren, is not part of this agreement.

To carry out the follow-up of the work, an institutional committee and another technical committee are set up. The agreement, which is valid until December 31, 2029, is now being handed over to Parliament as stipulated in the government law.
