Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska has since been charged in the United States for a curious violation of the sanctions imposed on him. The oligarch tried to organize a trip to the US for his pregnant girlfriend – so that the child would be born there and automatically receive US citizenship. But the attempt was thwarted — according to the US Department of Justice, a conviction could mean up to 20 years in prison.
The Justice Department released the lawsuit Thursday — it shows Deripaska allegedly incited helpers to organize a trip for his girlfriend to the United States. He thereby violated the sanctions, because since April 2018 American companies and citizens are no longer allowed to do business with him. But that’s not the only offense Deripaska is accused of. As early as 2020, he would have illegally organized the birth of another child in 2020.
First child was born as a US citizen
At that time, however, there were no problems: Deripaska’s girlfriend gave birth to a child and then remained undisturbed in Los Angeles for months. When she tried to re-enter the United States in June of this year, the attempt was thwarted. According to the lawsuit, she initially stated that the father of her two children was “Alec Deribasko” and described the oligarch only as an acquaintance. But the border officials noticed the resemblance between Deripaska and the father of the children. The billionaire’s girlfriend and two accomplices were also charged.
