The energy ministers of the EU countries want to decide on measures to combat high electricity prices during a special meeting in Brussels on Friday. The European Commission’s draft includes binding measures to reduce electricity consumption at peak times, the skimming of so-called random profits and a solidarity levy on energy companies. A gas price ceiling is also demanded by 15 EU countries, Austria fears for its security of supply.
Domestic Energy and Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) expects concrete resolutions to reduce high electricity prices. Beforehand, she mentioned a reduction in consumption at peak times, a solidarity contribution for fossil fuel companies that made arbitrary profits because of the war, and a ceiling on the electricity price for electricity producers with low costs.
Austria fears security of supply
At the same time, she advocates a rapid decoupling of electricity and gas prices. In response to calls for a gas ceiling, she said security of supply should be a top priority.
