German Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) has announced a corona fall and winter wave for our neighboring country. The number of cases is also currently increasing in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, France, England and Denmark, he said in Berlin on Friday. The number of Covid cases has also risen sharply in Austria this week.
“We are clearly at the beginning of a fall and winter wave. You see that not only in the German data, but also internationally,” says Lauterbach. According to him, it is the Omicron variant BA.5 that causes problems almost everywhere. “We must therefore be prepared to fight this wave. It won’t end soon – at least on its own,” he warned.
The seven-day incidence is increasing significantly
The German Robert Koch Institute (RKI) therefore recommends on its website to observe the hygiene rules and to use masks. In his weekly report, the number of people infected with corona last week was estimated at 500,000 to 1.2 million. On Friday morning, the national seven-day incidence was 466. This is a sharp increase compared to Thursday, when the value per 100,000 inhabitants per week was 409.9.
It is unclear how many Germans are actually infected with the corona virus at the moment. Experts have been assuming a large number of infections that are not registered for some time. This is mainly because by no means all infected people have a PCR test (and only the results count towards the statistics, note). Because people are increasingly staying indoors in the autumn, a further increase in diseases must be taken into account, the RKI also warns.
Lauterbach advises older people to take a fourth suture
The German health minister therefore appealed to people over 65 to get a fourth corona vaccination. Such a 90 percent reduction in mortality from an infection with the corona virus, according to Lauterbach. “It makes a huge difference for the elderly,” says the minister.
There is currently a large number of unreported cases of corona diseases. Nevertheless, the domestic Corona Commission at its meeting on Thursday concluded that the risk situation for the entire country should be classified as “medium risk”. The states of Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol and Vienna are also assessed as medium risk. Only Vorarlberg is classified as low risk.
