Whether tumor, mesh in law or a malignant injury – interventions on the visual organ are very delicate. At Tyrolean Medical University in Innsbruck, doctors are now trained with a unique method. The “Kroon” was part of the surgical date.
A premiere took place on Thursday in the dissect room of the Institute for Clinical-functional Anatomy at Medical University in Innsbruck. 30 doctors have completed a special type of operating training.
One of the tasks: remove a tumor directly on the bottom of the eye. The unique: for the first time the surgical method was practiced with loyal visual organs of the 3D printer.
Model can replace rare body donation
Everything seemed deceptive, as a spectator you felt in a real surgical hall, including a very uncomfortable feeling. So far, doctors have only been able to train such interventions on body donations.
“Of course they are not available in such a large number and certainly not with the corresponding pathological changes,” says Institute Director Marko Konchake obstacles in training that are now a thing of the past.
Together with the two Tyrolean companies Eyecre. At GMBH and Addion GmbH, the Medical University has developed a plastic model in almost all details in almost all details. Konchake: “All tissue layers of the eye are available in the model with the same properties.” When the surgeons start to cut, artificial blood runs out of the wound.
Few printers can form complex models in this way
According to the companies involved, there is only a handful of 3D printer in Europe that can produce complex structures. One of them is in Tyrol. The country has funded the project with 116,000 euros. The first artificial eyes of the 3D printer have been used in training and further education since Thursday.
Much more is possible in the future, the institute director is trust. The road to the 3D training heart with all functions and dust later from the original is not far. “An even better training from the doctors”, the participants in the new operating chamber training were enthusiastic.
