The condemnation of the European leaders is unanimous. European Council President Charles Michel also condemned Putin’s announcement, stressing that the EU will never recognize this illegal annexation. For his part, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has described the annexation as a “serious violation of international law and the United Nations treaties”.

The bloc has expressed concern in recent weeks about the escalation of Russian forces in its aggression against Ukraine. The mobilization of 300,000 reservists, threats to use nuclear weapons and illegal referendums have led Europe to propose an eighth package of sanctions against Moscow, which aims to further restrict trade with the country, impacting Russia at EUR 7,000 million. could have.
