The trial of three young men, who have been charged with rape leading to death and serious sexual abuse in the Vienna court in connection with the death of 13-year-old Leonie since the end of September, cannot go ahead as planned on Tuesday. It is unclear when the main hearing can resume.
This and the other hearings scheduled for this week had to be canceled due to illness of the presiding judge. Court spokeswoman Christina Salzborn announced this on Monday.
Drugged and raped
The prosecutor assumes that the suspect drugged the girl with the intention of abusing them and then assaulted the 13-year-old. The men of Afghan descent are between 19 and 23 years old. For the elder who was of age at the time of the crime, the risk of conviction is 10 to 20 years or life. The other two face up to 20 years if convicted.
Mutual guilt
The suspects had pleaded guilty in part at the beginning of the hearing, but then operated in their interrogations with mutual accusations. They emphasized that they did not know that the girl was only 13 years old and assumed she was 18.
Two spoke of voluntary sexual activity. The third claimed he was just cuddling with the girl. They didn’t want to hear about a rape.
