In view of the recent escalation of unrest in Iran, the Austrian Foreign Ministry has issued a travel warning for the entire country. “Due to the ongoing protests and their violent repression by the Iranian authorities, Austria has temporarily issued a travel warning for Iran. The Foreign Ministry strongly recommends that Austrians in Iran leave the country,” it said in a broadcast on Tuesday.
The Austrian embassy in Tehran offers emergency support. Since there may be frequent restrictions on communication services, Austrians in Iran who are in distress can contact the Foreign Ministry’s on-call service at any time.
Population tries the revolution
The unrest was caused by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini more than two weeks ago. The moral police had her arrested for her alleged “un-Islamic outfit”. What happened to Amini after that is unclear.
The woman fell into a coma and died in a hospital on September 16. Critics accuse the morality police of using force – the police deny it.
Since the young woman’s death, thousands of people across the country have demonstrated against the repressive course of the government and security forces, as well as against the Islamic system.
