Eligible voters who cannot vote for the presidential election at their primary residence polling station on Sunday will have the last chance (until midnight) on Wednesday to request an absentee ballot in writing. In this case you will receive it by post. It is still possible until Friday (12:00) to collect the voting cards in person or from an authorized courier at the town hall.
You can submit the written application to the municipality from which you are registered in the electoral register until midnight on Wednesday. This can be done by means of an informal written request, by e-mail, fax or – depending on the availability of the municipality – also online.
Quick online application
The online application can be made via the website help.gv.at, via the service www.wahlkartenanmeldung.at or via the online official service oesterreich.gv.at. All further information about voting with absentee ballots can also be found on the website of the digital counter.
Voting cards are available to voters who cannot come to the polling station of their main residence on Sundays (for example because of a trip, but also because of health reasons or because of age). The absent ballots can be taken to the district election authority from the time they are received through Sunday – the voter can bring the card themselves or send a messenger.
Delivery by post or in person
The absent ballots can also be sent to the government by post (the classic “ballot paper”). You have until Saturday morning at the latest to complete the task: the absent ballot papers must be in the post on time, because the postal votes must also arrive at the electoral authorities by 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Exceptionally, the mailboxes will be emptied and the voting cards delivered on Saturday morning (9 am) before the election. You also need a voting pass if you want to vote in a “foreign” polling station on Sunday – although an usher can also take it with you in this case.
