Worried about meltdown – IAEA chief travels to Kiev and Moscow this week

Date:

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, is traveling to Kiev and Moscow this week. The IAEA said in Vienna on Tuesday that Grossi will continue its deliberations on the establishment of a security zone around the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Ukraine. The goal is to create such a zone “as quickly as possible”.

During a visit to Armenia at the request of an AFP reporter, Grossi said the absence of the head of the nuclear power plant Ihor Murashov, who had been temporarily arrested by Russian soldiers, posed “no” security risks. Most importantly, Murashov is now back with his family, Grossi reported in Yerevan.

The boss of the nuclear power plant will no longer lead Zaporizhzhya
According to Ukrainian sources, Murashov was arrested on Friday by a Russian patrol. He has been free since Monday, but will not return to the facility as boss. He has now been reunited with his family in Ukraine-controlled territory, the IAEA said in a statement. It is not clear who will take over the position.

Europe’s largest nuclear power plant has been occupied by Russian troops since March. The facility has come under repeated fire in recent weeks during the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, which Moscow and Kiev have blamed each other for. The shelling and fighting near the nuclear power plant fueled fears of a nuclear catastrophe.
