What about the digital fitness of Mr and Mrs Austrians? The “Digital Skills Barometer” tries to answer this question. In short, it’s hard…
Do you know what a blockchain is? A chatbot? Or how a cloud works? No? Then you are in good company. Because when it comes to all questions related to the digital world, there is still a lot to improve in this country. At least that is the conclusion of the “Digital Skills Barometer”, which was presented on Wednesday.
Nearly 4,000 people of all ages (from 16 years), education and social classes were asked about their skills on mobile phones, computers, laptops or tablets. And the results show that Mr and Mrs Austrians are not completely beside themselves, but overestimate themselves when it comes to digital issues.
Hardly any differences in the comparison of the federal states
In principle, men navigate the digital world slightly better than women (see graph), they reach competency level 3 on the five-point scale, women simply miss it. Case study: A person at competency level 3 can use WhatsApp extensively, send messages and photos and adjust their privacy settings. Should problems nevertheless arise, this person needs support to be able to solve them. Interestingly, there are hardly any differences in the “skills” when comparing the federal states. Skills range from 40 to 43 percent, with Vienna performing best.
Still a lot to catch up on in cybersecurity
“However, to move safely and competently in the digital world, you need at least 60 to 80 percent digital fitness,” explains Florian Tursky, State Secretary for Digitization and Telecommunications at the Ministry of Finance. a digital workout, these are offered for free on various platforms and also by the police. Speaking of cybersecurity: there is still a lot to catch up on in this area!
Another part of the research was devoted to the topic of working from home, which has become increasingly popular since the pandemic. More than four in ten Austrians work at least partially from home. Unfair: Employers equip men more often than women.
