Monkeypox – Campaign Against Infection and Stigma

Date:

The Ministry of Health has launched an information campaign to combat the spread of monkey pox. With the slogan “Let’s not poke it” in combination with the keywords “One Night Stand”, “First Date” or “Lust” people with varying sexual partners should be addressed in particular. Head of department Johannes Rauch (Greens) warned against stigmatization that anyone could become infected.

“Down with the taboo! With the targeted information offensive, we want to make the population more aware of monkey pox,” explains Rauch. Currently, mainly – but not exclusively – men who have sex with men are affected by the disease.

“fighting stigma”
The Ministry is therefore in direct and constructive exchange with stakeholders and multipliers, such as the HOSIs and the Austrian AIDS Federations. “We absolutely must actively combat the stigmatization of gay men. Because the virus does not discriminate based on a person’s gender or sexual orientation,” Rauch emphasized.

Information in clubs and via social media
So-called free cards and posters in clubs and bars are now intended to draw attention to the risks of monkeypox infection. Information brochures are distributed through organizations in all federal states and can be ordered from the brochure service of the Ministry of Health. The campaign also runs on social media.

“To further contain the spread of monkeypox and prevent infection in the long term, it is important to recognize typical symptoms quickly and seek medical advice quickly,” Rauch emphasized. The campaign complements the information on the website of the Ministry of Social Affairs, which is also available in foreign languages.
