The coronavirus is spreading in the Chinese economic metropolis of Shanghai. On Sunday, authorities reported nearly 25,000 locally transmitted infections. While the numbers are still small compared to major US or European cities, China, with the government’s controversial zero-covid strategy, is the largest outbreak since Wuhan 2019, from which the pandemic began.
Authorities counted more than 1,000 cases with symptoms, plus nearly 24,000 asymptomatic cases. Shanghai is in a strict lockdown during the outbreak, which is slowing the economy.
Streets in Shanghai swept empty
The streets of the metropolis, where 26 million people live, were empty again this weekend. Residents are only allowed to leave their home with a special permit. Many supermarkets are closed, thousands of couriers cannot work. More and more citizens are therefore expressing their concerns about the food supply, and in some cases also about access to medical supplies. Videos circulating online show residents arguing loudly with guards over needing food.
As evidenced by social media chat groups, there are fears in other cities in the People’s Republic that there could be rigid lockdowns. In the 18 million city of Guangzhou, authorities are planning massive testing after some cases of Covid were reported.
