The shortage of staff in schools is reaching alarming proportions. Hundreds of Viennese primary school pupils do not have a class teacher, the main contact person for educational issues in the early school years. The children have yet to come to class.
German, mathematics, general knowledge, crafts, music, gymnastics: In primary school, the class teacher is responsible for almost all major subjects. At the same time, these educators are supporters and helpers to identify learning deficits at an early stage and to counteract weaknesses. That is why classroom teachers are so important to the development of six to ten year olds.
However, hundreds of Viennese girls and boys lack this care. “Twelve classes only have long-term classroom management at the end of the school year,” explains a spokeswoman for the Vienna Education Directorate. Reasons: general teacher shortage (all over Austria), pregnancies, absenteeism due to illness.
“No Distance Learning Lesson”
Even though some children prefer to stay at home because of this, they still have to come to class. “No class in Vienna is in distance learning,” it reads. Those affected are taken care of by other teachers. Possible in the short term, no solution in the long term.
The ÖVP is now targeting councilor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS), who recently declared in the state parliament that every class would have a class leader at the beginning of the school. Party chairman Karl Mahrer: “That is a blatant untruth. Returning justifies itself in the next city council.” The Turquoises are preparing investigations.
