Protests at the university – Iranian students against the president: “Go away”

Date:

Protests in Iran, sparked after the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, continue. During a visit by President Ebrahim Raisi to the university in Tehran, female students shouted to him: “Go away”. This is shown in a video published on the 1500tasvir Twitter account. In his address to students and professors at Alsahra University in Tehran, Raisi quoted a poem that equates rioters with flying.

“They assume they can achieve their diabolical goals in universities,” it says on state television. But students and professors are wary and don’t let that happen.

More demonstrations and strikes
Iran’s human rights group Hengaw said there were demonstrations and strikes in four cities after a call for mass demonstrations on Saturday. In the Kurdish cities of Saqez and Sanandaj, security forces fired on protesters and used tear gas.

A motorist is said to have been shot in the head during a demonstration in the western Iranian city of Sanandaj. There was conflicting information about the incident from officials and critics of the leadership. According to the local police chief, the man was shot dead by a protester. The protesters’ claims that the driver had been shot by security forces were unfounded, the police chief said, according to Tasnim news agency.

Man honked his horn and was shot
Supporters of the protests said on social media that the man honked his car horn as a sign of solidarity with the protests and was therefore shot in the head by police. According to some reports, the security forces have acted worse than the Islamic State terrorist group. Photos of the driver who died were also shared on social media.

Kurdish woman Amini was arrested in Tehran on September 13 for violating the rules for wearing a headscarf. She died three days later. There is conflicting information about the circumstances of her death. According to state information, a coroner concluded that Amini had died not from assault in police custody, but from a previous illness.

150 dead in protests
The young woman’s death sparked a nationwide wave of protests, long directed against the country’s leadership and restrictions on civil liberties in general. Civil rights groups say the protests have killed more than 150 people, injured hundreds and arrested thousands. The Iranian government blames its enemies – including the United States – for the protests. 20 security forces were killed.

A solidarity demonstration for the Iranian people also took place in Vienna on Saturday afternoon. There were no women in headscarves.
