Blame Russia? – State security established after train sabotage

Date:

After the train chaos on Saturday morning in northern Germany as a result of a sabotage act, state security is now investigating at the Berlin State Criminal Investigation Department. A political background is not excluded. Experts suspect that Russia could be behind the attack.

Unknown persons had destroyed important communication cables of Deutsche Bahn in two places on Saturday – train traffic in northern Germany was largely stopped for hours. International connections were also affected.

Backup system also failed
There is no official information about the possible perpetrators. However, it seems certain that it was a targeted attack. “We have a crime scene in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen,” said a spokesman for the Federal Police Directorate in Berlin. “Another is in North Rhine-Westphalia.” It was said from security circles that so-called fiber optic cables had been deliberately damaged in Berlin and in Herne in North Rhine-Westphalia. The backup system also failed.

Expert: ‘Russia is interested in panic in Europe’
German security expert Peter Neumann considers a Russian attack on the vital infrastructure in Germany conceivable. “Russia has an interest in causing panic in Europe and signaling that it can paralyze life very violently,” the researcher told RTL. It takes a lot of knowledge to attack these nodes. “It probably wasn’t amateurs or individuals. It was something that was done by professionals.”

Neumann, however, was concerned: “But of course there is no clear evidence. That’s why you have to be careful. It’s still a theory at the moment.”
