Explosions near Minsk – partisans destroyed Russian military aircraft

Several explosions raised the alarm on Sunday at a military airport near the Belarusian capital Minsk. According to reports, a reconnaissance aircraft belonging to the Russian armed forces has been badly damaged. Opposition activists believe the action was an act of sabotage by Belarusian partisans.

According to the BYPOL initiative, the front and center sections of the A-50 aircraft at Makhulishchi Air Base have been damaged by two explosions – the onboard electronics and the radar antenna are also said to have been affected. “The damage is extensive, the plane will definitely stop flying,” reads a report released by the activists on social media.

“Unknown Object at High Altitude”
After local residents previously reported loud explosions on the airport grounds, the independent Belarusian military monitoring medium “Belaruski Hayun” stated that the plane was likely “damaged by dropping an unknown object from a great height”. a large contingent of military, police and rescue workers, cars near the airport were also checked.

Successful sabotage?
“Those were drones. The participants in the operation are Belarusians,” Polish broadcaster Belsat quoted a statement from the head of the Belarus anti-government organization Bypol, Aliaksandr Azarau. “They are now safe, outside the country.” An adviser exiled opposition leader Svetlana Tichanovskaya describes the attack on Twitter as the most successful act of sabotage since early 2022.

Reuters was not immediately able to independently verify the reports. The defense ministries of Russia and Belarus did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
