Visit to Zelenskyj – Johnson: Walking Tour of War-torn Kiev

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received German Chancellor Karl Nehammer on Saturday and another European head of government: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also went to Kiev – although his visit was unannounced. Nevertheless, the warring president had time for a media-savvy stroll through the streets of Kiev with Johnson (see video above).

Apparently, the conservative head of government wanted to personally hand over the news to the president about the delivery of 120 armored vehicles and anti-ship missiles to Ukraine. Moreover, the road from the most recent donor conference in Warsaw (see video below) was not too long.

“We are increasing our military and economic support and bringing together a global alliance to end this tragedy,” Johnson said on the sidelines of the meeting with Zelenskyy. Care must be taken that “Ukraine survives and prospers as a free and sovereign nation.” The British government said the new arms deliveries went beyond the previous day’s pledge to send weapons worth £100 million (about €120 million). This pack also includes modern Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles, 800 anti-tank weapons and precision-guided ammunition. Britain is one of the main supporters of Ukraine.

Ambassador: Scholz should also go to Kiev
After the visit by EU leaders – represented by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell – on Friday and the two visits by Nehammer and Johnson, the pressure is on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to also travel to Kiev. now. “I really believe it can send a strong signal if the chancellor travels to Kiev,” Ukraine’s ambassador to Berlin, Andriy Melnyk, said. At the same time, however, he emphasized that Scholz should not come empty-handed. “It would be of central importance that the visit be accompanied by new strategic decisions by the traffic light coalition.”
