No easing of the already precarious situation in hospitals: in the worst case, up to 4,100 corona patients must be cared for in hospitals by the end of October. The last time there were that many was early December of the previous year. The number of new infections is currently stagnating – but for how long remains to be seen. Because winter is just around the corner.
While the number of corona hospital patients continues to rise, so does the absence of hospital staff. Unplanned gaps due to corona infections continued to appear in hospitals: compared to the previous week, the number of malfunctions rose to about seven percent.
Up to 4100 corona patients possible
As regards the occupancy rate of corona patients in hospitals, a temporary peak could be reached by October 26. The Covid Prediction Consortium estimates that in two weeks, 2360 to 3900 corona-infected people will be in normal wards and 130 to 200 will need to be treated in intensive care units (ICU). By comparison, 2,418 corona patients are currently being cared for in normal wards and 130 in intensive care.
new infections stagnate
The number of new infections is currently stagnating or decreasing in all age groups. There is already a significant decrease among the five to 14-year-olds. “In individual states, a temporary trend reversal to a decreasing number of cases could have already occurred,” the forecast said.
Winter is coming
An impact on hospitals – namely the decline in patient numbers – will only occur with a delay. However, winter is just around the corner – with which the infection pressure will increase again. It is no longer possible to predict what specific effects this will have on the number of infections in the winter months. There is uncertainty about the current number of unreported infections. The declining immunity against the coronavirus also plays a role, for which there is no data.
