Guanajuato, a thriving industrial state, has become the country’s most violent due to the dispute between drug cartels and fuel theft
Twelve people were killed on Saturday afternoon – early Sunday morning in Spain – in a shooting that was recorded at a bar in the city of Irapuato, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, located in the center of the country, the government said.
Local authorities confirmed “the deaths of six men and six women” as well as three injured, according to an official statement that does not specify who the attackers were or the reasons for the attack.
Police were detailed that the massacre took place around 7:51 PM and that it was believed to have been carried out by an armed group who entered the establishment and opened fire on all those present, including customers and bar staff.
At the scene of the shooting, the body of one of the victims was found next to a motorcycle, while the rest of the bodies were found inside the property.
The municipal government confirmed that with the support of the state police, the army, the prosecutor’s office and the national guard, an operation had been launched to find the aggressors.
The attack on the bar comes just 11 days after a massacre that left 20 people dead in San Miguel Totolapan, a city in the southern state of Guerrero, as a result of disputes between organized crime groups operating in that region of the country.
Guanajuato, a thriving industrial state, has become the most violent in Mexico as a result of the dispute between the Santa Rosa de Lima and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels, whose activities include drug trafficking and fuel theft.
According to the government, there were 2,115 homicides in that region between January and August, which together with five other states accounted for 48.7% of the homicides in the country during that period (total 20,722).
Mexico has recorded more than 340,000 murders, most attributed to criminal organizations, since the launch of a controversial military anti-drug offensive in December 2006.
