The Greek courts face a number of problems. Files pile up, sometimes even handwritten documents are transported back and forth in shopping carts. There are now so many cases pending that numerous proceedings have been stopped due to prescription.
The Greek newspaper “To Proto Thema” reported this on Tuesday, citing employees at the courts. The situation at the High Administrative Court StE is particularly worrying, where decisions are sometimes postponed for up to 19 years. The Court of Auditors is also completely overloaded with 122,000 pending cases and is in default.
Outdated system and lazy staff
Among other things, the completely outdated system is responsible. For example, court officials said handwritten documents had to be transported back and forth in shopping carts. Another challenge, according to To Proto Thema, is lazy, incompetent and often absent lawyers. The disciplinary body at the Greek Supreme Court in Athens has fired 20 staff, including judges and prosecutors, over the past ten months.
These people are responsible for the delays in the unprocessed proceedings, it said. There are now so many cases pending that numerous proceedings have been stopped due to prescription.
