The headscarf, also known as the hijab, has been the subject of debate in Iran for decades: in 1936 the Shah banned the Islamic veil and in March 1979 it became mandatory. Two months after the Islamic revolution turned Iran into a theocracy, religious leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued strict dress codes.
These are maintained by the notorious vice squad – a special police unit that has been increasingly present since the arrival of the current president, Ebrahim Raisi. And against whom sanctions were decided by EU foreign ministers for the violence against protesters.
