In a formal handover ceremony on Sunday, new Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni formally took over the government from her predecessor Mario Draghi. The handover ceremony took place in the seat of government, the Palazzo Chigi in Rome. The leader of the far-right Fratelli d’Italia (FdI – Brothers of Italy) was sworn in as prime minister on Saturday.
Following the ceremony with Draghi, who has been prime minister since February 2021, Meloni will chair her government’s first cabinet meeting. The 45-year-old has headed Italy’s right-wing government since 1946.
Deputy heads of government are Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani from Meloni’s coalition partners. Salvini of the right-wing Lega party is now also Minister of Transport. Tajani of the conservative Forza Italia (FI), former President of the European Parliament, holds the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs.
