Without nuclear energy, there is no safe power supply. “We need to be clear about that,” said Gerhard Christiner, head of infrastructure company Austria Power Grid (APG) in the krone.tv live chat with Katia Wagner. We are still dependent on nuclear energy. It is therefore not the time to demonize existing nuclear power plants. “It’s more about making the decision here in the future whether we are in favor of the wind turbines and photovoltaic systems or whether at some point new nuclear power plants will have to be built again to guarantee security of supply,” says Christine.
Winter is especially risky because the nuclear power plants in France are not available in the dimensions we are used to. “Currently, only 50 percent of France’s nuclear fleet is available. We hope that this will increase to 70 percent in January,” says Christiner. This is very important for security of supply in Europe.
As far as the gas situation is concerned, we are in a very good position this winter. “The parking facilities are de facto full.” There are still some risks with electricity this winter. The bigger question mark isn’t this, but next winter, as Christiner points out.
How green nuclear energy actually is and how much electricity actually comes from Russia, you can see all that in the video above.
