A senior Ukrainian official predicts “heaviest fighting” in the partially Russian-occupied southern Kherson province. “The situation around Kherson is clear. The Russians are stocking up and strengthening their group there,” Oleksiy Arestovych, the adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said in an online video published Wednesday.
“That means no one prepares for a retreat. On the contrary, the heaviest fighting will take place around Kherson,” the adviser said. On the contrary, the Russian army has been preparing for days to defend the occupied regional capital. Although the military leadership has left Kherson, new defense units are being brought there, according to Ukrainian military intelligence.
In the war of aggression, Kherson was the only regional capital of Ukraine to fall into Russian hands. Moscow has declared that the city and the administrative region have been annexed to Russia. For weeks, however, the Ukrainian army has been pushing further and further into the Russian bridgehead on the northwestern bank of the Dnipro River.
Ukraine with clear territorial gains
In recent weeks, the situation of Russian troops in the Kherson region has deteriorated significantly – especially on the right bank of the Dnipro, where Kherson is located. The supply has almost come to a halt due to the Ukrainian shelling of the bridges. During an offensive in early October, the Ukrainians managed to capture significant territory.
US President Joe Biden and Britain’s new prime minister, Rishi Sunak, held a telephone conversation on Tuesday about the importance of aiding Ukraine, the White House said in a statement. Biden also spoke with Italy’s new prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, about continued support for Ukraine.
