The fire brigade had to rescue 1,700 soup chickens from a burning transport truck in Haid in Upper Austria on Friday evening. The vehicle caught fire on the Western Autobahn.
At 11.45 pm, the driver of the animal transport, which was loaded with 1,700 chickens, discovered the fire in his vehicle, which was probably caused by a defect in the right rear tire. The 48-year-old Romanian from the Amstetten district was able to unhook the trailer with another 1,700 chickens on the hard shoulder and stop the burning truck a few meters later.
Many chickens died in fire
Although the fire brigade in Ansfelden and Nettingsdorf were able to contain the fire quickly, the further rescue operation for the surviving chickens became a challenge. A small part of the chickens died in the fire.
Plastic boxes melted
Emergency services had to gain access to the cargo area of the truck damaged by the fire. However, rescuing the surviving chickens proved difficult as some of the plastic boxes had melted in the fire and were extremely difficult to reload. The official veterinarian of the Eferding district was notified and taken to the scene of the accident.
kilometer long traffic jam
The first and second lanes had to be closed during the cleanup work. The accident site was secured and cleaned by the ASFINAG Traffic Manager. Due to the early morning traffic, there was a mile-long traffic jam. The truck, which was no longer drivable, was removed at the scene of the accident. The undamaged trailer has also been removed.
