For 20 days, the tomcat “Pauli” disappeared from his house near Kapfenberg, then the Styrian velvet paw appeared 140 kilometers away in Vienna. A passerby reported a free-roaming cat at the municipal animal shelter in Seestadt. Although “Pauli” was not chipped or registered, thanks to an intensive search by his family and friends, the animal enclosures soon came to a happy ending: his photo was recognized on the find page on the internet.
On September 9, the one-year-old tomcat escaped through a patio door that was not properly closed. His owner immediately went looking for the tiger cat in the area, asked the Styrian animal shelters and forwarded a report of a missing person to the media. “Pauli” remained as if swallowed by the face of the earth – until September 29.
1500 animals found per year
About 1,000 cats and 500 dogs are found in Vienna every year, many of them unable to go home, said Tierquartier operations manager Thomas Benda. “Chipping and correct registration saves a lot of suffering and worries.” If “Pauli” escapes again, so will he: “Like all cats found in the animal enclosures, he is microchipped.”
