On the Feuerkogel – Nocturnal rescue operation as a tightrope walk act

Date:

A hiker (57) from Ebensee was injured while descending the Feuerkogel. He had strayed from the route over the Schwarzeckalm and injured his leg when he fell on very steep terrain. The nighttime rescue was complex and dangerous – the purest tightrope walk.

On Thursday, the 57-year-old from Ebensee undertook a mountain tour from Vorderer Langbathsee via the Schwarzeckalm to his home mountain, the Feuerkogel. He also wanted to go off the same route to get to his vehicle. The unmarked trail leads over a deserted alpine meadow at about 1250 meters above sea level. For this area, the hiker may have lost his orientation and ended up on very steep, pathless terrain in the area of the so-called Dürrengraben.

Stuck on a ledge
After a phone call with his partner, she notified a member of the mountain rescue service because the hiker stated it would take a little longer for the way back. During the conversation that followed, it turned out that he was sitting on a ledge and could not move forward or back. Emergency services were then alerted and attempted to locate the climber.

battery was empty
“The first thing we had to do was find the lost person, as his battery was dead after the last phone call and he couldn’t give any light signals. We heard calls from Kreh’s parking lot, but we didn’t know where he was,” explains the operative. manager of the mountain rescue service Ebensee. “We split into three groups and tried to find the location screaming. Due to the very steep terrain, we were unable to cross the so-called Dürrengraben directly, so we had to climb further and abseil towards the injured person,” explains the operations manager.

Meanwhile, two rescuers, who had taken the direct route from further down, were able to climb to Missing, pin him down and administer first aid. “We could hear him well, but had to climb some steep stairs to get to him,” said the rescuer, who had called the hiker ahead of time.

Bound on a stretcher
After first aid, the slightly injured man was lowered on rope railings. As the terrain became steeper and the injured leg was causing problems, he was strapped to the stretcher brought by the next mountain rescuers.

Mission ended after midnight
At around 12:30 PM, all vehicles arrived and the operation, which involved 14 members of the Ebensee Mountain Rescue Service and 4 officers of the Alpine Police, was terminated.

Everyone back safe
“I am very happy that all emergency services are back here unharmed, that was not self-evident today,” said the deputy local manager of the mountain rescue service Ebensee during the debriefing.
