By cosmic standards and quite small for its size, an asteroid hurtles past Earth on Tuesday, All Saints’ Day. The near-Earth object is estimated at 740 meters, which is only slightly smaller than the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.
The asteroid was named 2022 RM4, it is assigned to the objects near Earth. Those that pass within a radius of seven million kilometers from Earth and have a diameter of more than 140 meters are considered “potentially dangerous”.
Distance of six distances earth-moon
Requirements that 2022 RM4 meets according to NASA: The shortest distance at which the asteroid will pass Earth is about 2.3 million kilometers, less than six lunar distances from our home planet. Its size is estimated at 330 to 740 meters, the speed at which it will race around Earth is around 84,500 kilometers per hour, according to media reports.
In comparison, the meteorite that left the so-called Barringer Crater when it hit Arizona was about 150 feet in diameter. The dimensions of the crater: 1200 meters in diameter and 180 meters deep.
Since 2022 RM4 has been one of the “potentially dangerous objects”, it has been closely monitored by astronomers, as are all other celestial bodies in this category. For example, with regard to the predicted orbit and a possible danger to the earth.
